This is an informational message to let people know about something that has been a fairly big part of my daily life for almost two years now. Folding@Home or F@h. In the core its a project to help researchers at Stanford process information on how proteins fold to understand how the human body works and how certain proteins are connected to genetic diseases. You download a client program that will download a small math based core that takes work units, WUs, from a Stanford server and computes how a certain protein would fold under specific conditions and when the WUs is done the results are sent back to the server. In return Stanford keeps track the work you have done and gives you points that are just a measurement based representation of the work you have done. This also means that you create a unique username so everything you do is specific to you, but also you can form a team with a group of friends or businesses and compete against other teams and people in the world. There are clients that run on your CPU or GPU, they are designed to use spare computational power from the processors.
I am encouraging everyone that spends the time to read this to take a few extra minutes to read Stanford's site about this project and really consider doing this. You can do this anonymously if you want or you can even just go ahead and join an already established team because nothing is exclusive. I fold for Team Icrontic.com, Team 93, so feel free to join us if you want to be part of an already grounded and highly ranked team./shameleess plug
If you have any questions or comments, maybe you are already doing this post your experience and why you do it, let me know.
