Maxtor Drive Suddenly Quit Working
The bios doesn't see it anymore. It makes a clicking sound. It has valuable data I would like to get out of it. I see there is a firmware update available but don't know how to flash it since bios doesn't see drive.

I'm about to send it in to i365 to see if firmware update can fix?. has anyone had a drive drop off their bios that made a weird clicking(not the usual click of death, only way i can describe it.) sound and was fixed by i365 bios update?
My drive is one of those affected by bad firmware but how do you know 100% if the reason your drive just all of a sudden dropped off your bios is fixable by the firmware update? what other symptons are there to these problems?
i'm sending the drive in but would like to know if there is any more info available or if i'm at the mercy of i365 which quoted me 700 to 2000 if the drive isn't fixable by update.
has anyone here unbricked a drive that i365 said firmware couldn't fix on their own?

ugh... that's a seagate drive... under maxtor label for starters
pulling data off the drive may be possible.... as for 'fixing' the drive itself... just rma that bitch

can't rma it. i want the data off it. just need to find a professional place that isn't trying to rip people off or do a fix a lot of people have success with online...just that it takes 2 or 3 hours to do and 40 bucks in parts and it is delicate work. with any luck seagate fixes it with the firmware update

not sure why you "can't" rma it... you can get the data off of it in a couple of ways... the first is to swap the controller board from another similar drive, rip the data, and swap it back.
get the data off of it, then rma it...
if you want to bring it over, i'll give it a shot to recover the data w/o swapping the controller board.. you'll need to bring a drive to catch the data on (an empty one as it will be wiped in the process)
